(RIT)
Originally the Department of Engineering at Rangoon (Yangon) University. A new campus at Gyogone, Insein Township, was constructed in 1958-1961 with assistance from the Soviet Union. RIT became completely independent of Rangoon University in 1964, as part of a general university reorganization carried out by the Ne Win regime. The institute is best known to the outside world for the Tea Shop Incident of March 12, 1988, a fight between RIT students and town youths, which took place at the Sandar Win Teashop adjacent to the campus and escalated into a large-scale student demonstration. In 1998, RIT's name was changed to Yangon Technological University; the following year, a new campus was opened in Hlaing Thayar Township west of the Hlaing River.
